Summary of Inaugural Meeting

An informal meeting was held at 2 P.M. Saturday June 29, 2002 at the Stormy Lake Public Boat Launch to explore the need for and interest in an association representing all Stormy Lakefront owners. Representatives of all three Stormy Lake Road Associations attended as well as a number of independent owners.

The informal meeting concluded that a lake wide association would be beneficial. The main issues of interest are: safety and security; annoyance resolution; social - getting to know eachother. Representatives should include seasonal cottagers and permanent residents.

Highlight of the meeting:

Stormy Lake 'bring your own' picnic at the boat launch 4pm Saturday July 13... rain date July 14, 2002.

  • FOCA membership - all owners could be included under proposed association
  • Road Liability Insurance - expensive and it may just be an invitation to sue
  • Every Road Association should be incorporation - Can one 'Lake' association cover all roads?
  • 66' Shore Allowance - needs to be challenged - possibly through FOCA
  • Federal Government Issues - no specific issues discussed
  • Ontario Government Issues - no specific issues discussed
  • Haliburton County Issues - no specific issues discussed
  • Highlands East Issues - next official plan meeting in Wilberforce 10am July 27 
  • Taxes - increasing taxes, decreasing services
  • 9-1-1 - many road names need changing to eliminate confusing duplication. North Road already changed its name to Journey's End Trail
  • Fish Stocking - no discussion
  • Rock Bass Derby - flyers were distributed for this year's Derby
  • Water Quality - one sample from end of bay tested: >80 coliforms, e-coli present!!!
  • Zebra Mussels - no discussion
  • Spiny Water Flea - no discussion
  • Purple Loose strife - taking over wetlands. Getting closer - now past Fenelon Falls. Needs everyone's cooperation to pick and burn before it goes to seed.
  • Acid Rain - no discussion
  • Shore Erosion - strong complaints re boats generating huge wakes.
  • Wildlife Preservation  - no discussion
  • Public Boat Launch - dock and ramp are maintained by municipality but at start of each season
  • Dam Maintenance - several volunteers looking into replacing weak timbers
  • Annoyances - dispute resolution forum needed to avoid direct confrontations:
    • Wakes - nose high cruising is damaging docks and eroding shorelines
    • Light Pollution - dispute aired over an offensive 'yard' light
    • Sound Pollution - barking dogs and PWCs
    • Graffiti - how can we get people to stop painting names on rocks
  • Lake History - some attendees have been on the lake for over 50 years
  • Security - watch for suspicious activity. Note license plate numbers. 
  • Police - would a designated rep get police to respond in a timely fashion? 
  • Wilberforce Volunteer Police Assoc. want reps from each area of the lake.
  • Boat Operator Licences required for boats under 13.5 feet by September 
  • Social - annual lake wide picnic/barbecue/corn roast. 
  • Web Site - stormylake.ca is currently a personal web site. Suggestions welcome to make it an association web site. Current privacy policy excludes last names, addresses (including email addresses) and telephone numbers.
